Premera Blue Cross History

Premera Blue Cross' story began with a plan for hospital pre-payment for schoolteachers in 1929 in Dallas, with a pre-payment of 50 cents a month. The plans then formed across the country, and by 1932, were associated with more hospitals, giving members more choices. One of those plans in St. Paul, Minnesota used a blue cross, which in 1972 became the symbol and name of Blue Cross Association, then becoming a blue Greek cross with a human figure in the center. Blue Cross started operating in Washington in 1933 and in Alaska in 1952, after it moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1945, with business booming after the Second World War. It added Premera to the name to underline the plan's connection with the Premera family of health plans which it incorporated. Today, Premera's evolutionary approaches to health plans, known as Dimensions, give it a new business model, a new portfolio of consumer-friendly products, simplified operations and fresh technology, while providing best practices but cutting costs. Its mission is to be the health plan of choice and of excellence in the Pacific Northeast and Alaska.
