CIGNA History

CIGNA was formed through the merging of the Insurance Company of North America (INA) and Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG). CIGNA's early roots were planted in 1792, when INA established the first marine insurance company in the United States. INA's first life insurance policy was issued to a sea captain and guaranteed coverage in the event of his capture by pirates. The company grew along with the young nation's ever-changing needs. By 1871, INA was making a name as a secure and dependable provider, one of only 51 insurance companies to pay claims in full following the great Chicago fire catastrophe. In 1942, without privilege to confidential details, INA issued the accident and health insurance policies for the 30 men involved in the Manhattan Project. INA began its international expansion in 1946. CG incorporated in 1865 as a life insurance company and began planting the seeds of the CIGNA Retirement and Investment Services, providing analysis and recommendations on the investment of company premiums.
